Established in 1972, Sugarmill Woods was the first development in America to use the concept of greenbelts, which allow nature and people to live together in harmony.
In accordance with this idea, more than one million trees have been planted in Sugarmill Woods, providing a safe refuge for more than 150 plant and animal species that reside in Sugarmill Woods.

Sugarmill Woods is located at the southern tip of Citrus County in Homosassa, a town steeped in history, from the ancient Native Americans and Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto to the Yulee family that owned the Yulee Sugarmill, which supplied molasses, syrup and sugar to southern troops during the Civil War.

Pictured here are the remains of the old Sugar Mill.

There is plenty of world-caliber golf in Sugarmill Woods. The first nine-hole golf course and clubhouse were built in 1975. Ron Garl, one of Florida's foremost golf course architects designed the layout.

The next nine-hole course was completed in 1978 and the third nine holes in 1981. Later an additional eighteen-hole course designed by U.S. Open Champion, Hale Irwin was finished in 1992 along with another clubhouse.
